What Happens When You Don’t Change Your HVAC Filter?
The filter plays an important role when it comes to keeping your air conditioner in Marathon, FL, running efficiently. Like any component, though, it needs replacing when it no longer does its job: in this case, every 60 to 90 days. Here are some of the problems that might emerge if you don’t replace your HVAC air filter.
Short Cooling Cycles
A clogged filter becomes an obstacle to air circulation, which puts strain on the motor and may cause it to overheat. Consequently, your AC system may still turn on but will shut down prematurely during each cycle.
Higher Energy Bill
The motor must also work harder to keep the air circulating, which means more energy use. You’ll no doubt see this reflected in your overall cooling costs.
Lukewarm Air
Naturally, with the AC system short-cycling, you won’t get so much cool air. Even worse, the air may become lukewarm to begin with. This will happen when dirt and debris pass through the filter and coat the evaporator coil.
The evaporator coil absorbs heat from your home, but such a build-up of pollutants will prevent this from happening. A dirty evaporator coil may even freeze, in which case you’ll need to schedule an AC repair.
Dirty Indoor Air
All those pollutants that the filter isn’t trapping will enter the air handler and circulate back into your home. If anyone in your home suffers from asthma or allergies, they will be the first to notice the change.
